What components require firmware updates and what are the "catches"?

So I haven't built my own PC in a while and I'm doing so now. Here's what I've come up with: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/eViA

Essentially my friend said I'll need to update the firmware on my SSD for best performance (basically said it was a must) but that it will wipe the drive. I wasn't aware of this and luckily haven't set everything up yet so I'm glad I found this out beforehand. My question is do any other components need/require/benefit greatly from firmware updates, and are there any catches that I need to be aware of like losing the data on my drive? Thanks in advance!

No, u don't have to update your FW all the time. Its not smart to do it right away.

U should wait, and see if its buggy or not, and if there is a benefit for u.

Read the change log.

Sometimes its worth to do it, yes, but if u have no issues with your HW, leave it be.

It can bring u some issues.

If u have problems, than it is good idea to upgrade and see if its solved the problem.

So, not all updates are good.

And u should always back up your data, as it is bit risky, those updates ; )
