I7 for video editing

So I might build a computer for my friend who is probably going to go into video editing a possibly special effects in college. I think you are supposed to get an i7 for good video editing as that is what he will be doing mostly video editing, and he will not do much special effects. I also assume that he will be needing to do video encoding. He will also use the computer for gaming a lot. I was also thinking a good graphics card for him would be a 7870. So my primary question is should I get an i7 or an i5? Also if you think this would be a good graphics card for him.

the 660ti only makes games better. most video editing happens on the CPU
The i7 is a solid thing for video editing, but if you're on a smaller budget the i5 3570K is fine. The 7870 is solid but depending on the program he uses, if it's Premiere Pro or AE5 he should use the GTX 660 Ti or GTX 670. However overall as a gaming card, the 7870 is better than the 660 Ti.
