Hi everyone, I'm posting here for the first time so I guess similar questions were asked in the past.
Anyway, here's my question, I have a Sapphire HD 6970 2gb running on a Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 rev 3.1 board, I live in the tropics and the room does not have AC so average temps during the day is around 30c. The card is in the first PCIe slot PCI Express x16 Slot (PCIEX16_1) which is close to the chipset and the cpu cooler Noctua NH-U12P I noticed a lot of heat builds up in this area between the card and the cpu. Idle GPU temps are around 46c and when gaming Alan Wake etc it would reach lower 90s but never crossed 95c. I want to move the card to the second PCIe slot so that it is more in line with the 140mm HAF 912 side panel fan.
Would the single card perform the same in this slot? It's all about lower temps. Thanks for any replies.

Specs:

CM HAF 912 (200mm intake front, 200mm exhaust top, 120mm rear, 140mm side)
Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5 rev 3.1 board
Phenom II x4 955 BE @3.5Ghz
8Gb Kingston HyperX DDR3 @1600Mhz
Sapphire HD 6970 2GbOnboard sound
2 Slow (need to upgrade) HDD
Corsair TX750 Power
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit

PCI-E slot 2 also runs in x16 mode. You won't lose any performance if you changed the card there.

I checked your motherboard manual to make sure

Hope that helps :)

I agree with fantastik that it is worth a try because it is a x 16 slot and at that speed. However it does say it is recommended to use slot one. But that does not mean slot two will work.

The only other thing is to get a faster fan on the side or have a few exhaust fans as well. Get it to have good air flow. Or trade up to a bigger case. Also where you put your tower should be in a open area.

Not stuck in a cabinet or under a desk. If the out side air is confind then the heat has no where to go. My rig sits on top of my desk with nothing around it to collect the heat plus I have a fan blowing at me and the case.

That keeps the out side are moving and taking the heat with it. This is just food for thought. Good luck to you.

Thanks for the response, the tower is on a desk where fresh air blows from outside.
Not ready for a bigger case just yet so I'll just move the card for now,
Thanks much!

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, so far so good! At first it was kind of worring because when I booted up after the switch windows automatically loaded the drivers for the card but everything on screen was very large (800 x 600) and my default res 1680 x 1050 (for 22" monitor) could not be found! Went into device manager and it stated 'standard vga adapter' and 'plug & play monitor' not my LG monitor.
Rebooted.......same thing, only when I manually reinstalled the catalyst 12.4 drivers and booted again did everything correct itself. Well temps on the card are about 4 - 5 degrees lower now and performance is the same, so I'm COOL with that.....for now!

Thanks again.
