Easy answer is both.

Small SSD (128GB) for the boot drive and important programs/games, and then a TB Hard Drive for mass storage. Thats a fairly standard setup.

But if you can only have one, a HDD.
If you buy an SSD that will fit a gaming library, the OS, Media, files, downloads and programs you are paying so much money that you should have done my first suggestion anyway.

If anything the other way round, an SSD will outlast a Hard Drive. An SSD has no moving parts inside unlike a hard drive which has spinning magnetic disk's. Only thing that could break an SSD other than just outright smashing it would be a power surge through the PC, and if that happens you will have bigger problems than the SSD.

Here's a video that demonstrates SSD's reliability (the first bit anyway).

And skip a minute in on this one.

EDIT: Theres also that, NAND chips on SSD's do degrade over time. But with modern SSD's there are so many redundancies built in, advanced controllers and functions like TRIM which will keep the drive running at optimal performance. And if you use the SSD as intended, a static storage solution (so not constantly moving stuff on/off, deleting things and overwriting or *Shudder* defragging), it should last many years past a HDD.

The NAND chips on SSDs eventually degrade but for a quality drive, you're talking about many many years. It'll die probably later than typical HDDs experience a mechanical failure.

Friend of mine works for an engineering firm, and his company equips all their engineers' laptops with SSD.

Ssd lifespans are shorter than Mech drives due to various issues, but they are improving all the time, I think the expectancy now is around three years,
Basic guideline of Ssd use, only Os and favourite games on there,
anything you value goes on your mech drive (although you still need to backup/ensure integrity on those)
