Brand new rig, programs crashing for no obvious reason

Greeetings. I had recently assembled a rig. The problem is that everything seems to run ok, but then, suddenly, either the program first freezes a bit then crashes, I get some random colors along with the freeze (filling the entire monitor) or I get a BSOD. I had since bought a rosewill $5 fan that seemed to have solved it, but a few moments ago Tribes Ascend froze and crashed. I decided to test out prime95, but in no time at all, workers #2 AND #3 stop, saying that a hardware failure was detected. Here's what results.txt says:

I thought that it was either the psu or the gpu, but the results after installing that cheap $5 fan and the prime95 result made me think otherwise.
Please note that I had the fan installed for only 1 day and I didn't touch tribes ascend the entire day. I only played some quake live, which should barely touch the gpu. I also didn't run the the entire prime95 test and had used the test "blend" I already tried changing RAM timings but that didn't and upping cpu voltage a bit, but prime95 still gave the same results within moments. I even ran the Heaven Benchmark with everything maxed including tessellation for a bit and it didn't crash.
Edit: I forgot to mention that prior to the Rosewill fan, ther rig was running so hot that I had to remove a sidepanel temporarily.

stress.txt
file on your computer?
I am guessing you have a RAM problem I would run memtest overnight to see.

EDIT: This crash was a bug in this game. Only this one is confirmed to be a bug in the game. Here are my temps according to HWmonitor after crashing from a different game, Tribes Vengeance (because I'm too lazy to paraphrase).

I thought that it was either the psu or the gpu, but the results after installing that cheap $5 fan and the prime95 result made me think otherwise.
Please note that I had the fan installed for only 1 day and I didn't touch tribes ascend the entire day. I only played some quake live, which should barely touch the gpu. I also didn't run the the entire prime95 test and had used the test "blend" I already tried changing RAM timings but that didn't and upping cpu voltage a bit, but prime95 still gave the same results within moments. I even ran the Heaven Benchmark with everything maxed including tessellation for a bit and it didn't crash.
Edit: I forgot to mention that prior to the Rosewill fan, ther rig was running so hot that I had to remove a sidepanel temporarily.


Your symptoms point to RAM being bad. But reviewing the system specs., it is MOST likely that the problem is the overclocking of the CPU, which is also the RAM controller. A bad RAM controller could easily cause symptoms of (bad RAM), which is the exact symptom that you have.

If you roll back the CPU clock speed to default, I'm at least 50% certain that your problem will go away. I can't be more certain than that as (unfortunately) there is a good chance that your CPU is permanently damaged by overclocking.

Bottom line, you've either got bad RAM or a bad RAM controller. Seeing as the RAM controller is built into the overclocked CPU, I'd say your most likely suspect is a bad CPU now...

You guys have hit the nail on the head. The RAM was related to the problem. It was the only thing that couldn't survive the initial mysterious amount of heat. I tested it using memtest several times, and failed at different parts of the test each time. Not one test on this computer would go through to the end. It would just freeze with the cursor (the _ thing) still blinking. I'm very sure this is an overheating issue although. I had ordered 2 fans. One hasn't arrived yet. I can get it almost directly on the RAM. I don't think the CPU is the problem because I had it in another computer so that it would get used during the wait for the other parts and this problem didn't occur. I think the motherboard might have something to do with this because I had most of the parts on a different computer (which had a plain case) and they ran cooler.

The GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P Motherboard is a 4x1 phase design. You probably blew the board when you tried to overclock it.

I had previously overclocked this CPU on an a770E3 and didn't experience this problem. I opened the graphics card prior to starting this thread and saw that the paste on the core (is it called a core?) did not give any resistance when pulling. Should I try replacing it? On a side note, I'm still waiting for USPS to deliver my other fan. I paid for 2 day shipping... Overseas. It went through arrival scan on August 15, they kept delivering it to incorrect addresses and now they "downgraded" the shipping and sent it back to Newegg. Also, I did an "upgrade" install and removed Catalyst completely using both the uninstaller and Driver Fusion, reinstalled them, and I immediately noticed that overall performance was faster. Tribes Ascend crashed around the third Match, though. Haven't tried encoding anything yet. Did I mention that when i'm going to get a blue screen that it freezes with a buzzing sound? What I am trying to say is that you are asking too much of your equipment. Sorry but that is the way it is. A VW bug can run the 24 hours at Le Mans but she can't win it. Don't OC any board with a 4X1 phase design. It's a bad idea.

The problem might have just been that the HT and Northbridge frequency where too high. They where set at 2500mhz by default. I bumped back their multipliers to 9x. They currently sit at 2250mhz. Haven't gotten a crash yet, but don't close this thread yet. Please give it at least a month to be sure.
