HD 7970 as an all-rounder

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

Hello,

I'm gonna build a new setup soon:

Processor: Intel I7 3770K Ivy Bridge
PSU: Corsair TX650
Heatsink: Corsair Hydro Series H100
MoBo: Asus P8Z77-V DELUXE
RAM: 16GB or 32GB DDR3-1600
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB
Graphics: MSI HD7970 Lightning

I'll overclock it, and it's going to be used mainly for video rendering and image work (photoshop, sony vegas pro, etc), but I want it to handle games as well.

Since I'm not using it for commercial purpose, my question is: will the 7970 be a good all-rounder, or should I sacrifice gaming going for a Quadro 4000 or sticking with the Ivy Bridge integrated HD 4000?

Graphics card Master

The 7970 will work fine. The Quadro cards are useful if you need the professional driver suite to run certain CAD applications or want 10 bit colour depths. Since these are primarily the domain of commercial users you probably don't need it.
Graphics card Authority

+1 above. The large amount of memory on the card will help with workstation type stuff.

On an unrelated note -- on a build of this quality/price it is definitely worth bumping up to the M4 256. It would be a tight squeeze to fit windows and the entire adobe suite on the 128 and still have room for the files you are working on. I just upgraded from the 128 -- i had windows, drivers etc, and only a few games fit on it.

I' consider getting the 256. Thanks.

Not sure about the MoBo. Enthusiast thing, you know? But I'll definitely consider going to the Hyper 612. Thanks.
