Radeon 5970 Performance Issues

Hi Toms,

I'm having a problem with BF3 and my AMD 5970. To be as precise as possible....Performance is terrible, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I run Crysis, Diablo III, Eve online, Witcher, Skyrim, Max Payne without any issues. I'm able to play most of these games at high settings at 5760x1200 resolution....However with BF3, I am able to pull 15 - 40 fps max at all times with graphics set to low, medium and high. I don't get it. Deferred is off, and no amount of lowering X setting gets any appreciable jump in frame rates. The strange thing is, when in camera mode in a vehicle or in a kill cam FPS hops up to around 100. I have tried drivers 12.3, 12.4, 12.6 and 12.7 with the necessary cap files.

Here are my system specs:
920 @ 3.8ghz
6gb corsair ram
evga sli le mobo
Radeon 5970 @ stock clocks
Windows 7 64 bit on Corsair 140gb Force 3 gt SSD
Storage Drive: 700gb Western Digi Black @ 7200 RPM

I'm playing the game in 1920x1200 res. The game won't start in eyefinity.

Please help.

You are correct, BF3 doesnt really like older generation Radeons. It must be the drivers they have set up for the card.

Also, some people have been having problems with those Radeon cards and Crossfire as well.

My PSU is a 1000w silverstone. Yeah, I have seen the other threads...So I guess I need to upgrade my video card then? Shame...I suppose 3 years is a good run.

I'll buy that 5970 off of you. Let's negotiate, today is my birthday and I wanted to get a new card.

I see...Any recommendations as to what videocard to go to? I'm leaning towards the 680...I play at 5760 x 1200 and would like to continue to do so. Not sure how nvidia compares to ati in eyefinity...I just know that I am sick of ATI and their shitty drivers.

Hey my friend i was in your shoes 2 weeks ago. i was playing bf3 with my 5970 and keeped on having driver issues i got sick of it. so i sold it on ebay for like 320bucks and got a gtx 590 brand new. THE DRIVERS OMG THE DRIVERS so good. and games honestly looks 5x times better. the 5970 in terms of raw power is good but its a old card like 3 years old. with the 5970 i would get lots of lag on ultra on bf3. no problems with my 590. so i reccmoned you get a 680 is just a bit slower than 590 so youill see a bit improvement like me

Yes me friend you are. the 5970 is old and drivers are *** (i apologise for my language) and omg its loud haha. get the 680 and youill be tearing up games like me
on bf3 on ultra everything maxed i dont drop under 80fps when things get super intesne and average around 95-120fps. everything maxed so yea 1080p
oh and the guy saying people playing the game on 60fps on youtube. trust me 60fps feels like 25fps with the 5970 lol

Yea it surprised me how good it was, i only got it though since i got it for $350 dollars brand new. if you can get a 590 brand new cheaper than 670 why the hell not haha.
but dont pay like 700dollars for retail for one just because its a bit faster than a 680. if your a on a budget go for a 670 then
