I am trying to find the best preformance possible for skyrim with my 6950 2gb card, the game runs alright at Ultra with Antialiasing at 8 samples and Antisotropic Filering at 16 samples, but the game is chopy when I am outside in some areas, and its just really annoying to me. I read in another forums to go into the Control Center and turn up the AA there to max, but I can't make since of how to navigate the AMD VISION Engine Control Center.

Here is my DxDiag report.

Bethesda games are notorious for streaming information from the hard drive without buffering enough of it first. Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas were an order of magnitude worse than Skyrim. The best way to tackle this problem is to move Skyrim to an SSD

It's a storage drive that stores data electronically in FLASH memory, its very similar to a number of USB drives put in parallel. They're a bit expensive but worth the money for any gaming computer

so that is the key? getting a Solid State Drive? What about the Control Center? or changing the Settings? should I just put them back to max settings?

The problem doesn't lay with the graphical settings, it lays with the way the game handles its data. Skyrim is HUGE, and unlike most arcade shooters there's far too much for the game to load the entire outdoor area into memory at once. This is why Bethesda separates The Elder Scrolls games into "indoor cells" and "outdoor cells". Indoor areas are usually small enough that all necessary data can be loaded into memory at once so that no matter where you are in the indoor zone its operating on data that is purely in memory. When you transition from indoor location to indoor location, or outdoor location to indoor location, all the necessary data for the new indoor location is loaded before you take control of your character. However, since the outdoor area is continuous from one side of the province to the other it loads a certain number of cells in each direction and then loads the rest only as it needs them. Ideally the game would load enough cells in each direction to satisfy the draw distance requirements as well as a couple of "buffer" cells beyond which allows you to travel into them while it loads the cells beyond the buffer cells and unloads the cells behind you since they're no longer needed until you head back there.

Consequently, cells have to be loaded directly from the hard drive which is hard to do in real time. There are two ways to approach this.

1. Install a hard drive which allows cells to be loaded faster

2. Install more memory and hope that Windows intelligently uses it for a disk cache, essentially preloading the data from the hard drive into the unused memory so that its already present when the application tries to load it.

Solution #1 is much more reliable than solution #2 but is also more expensive. With that said, if you were to install 8 or even 16GB of memory you would most likely notice a performance improvement over time.

It's actually trivially easy

First, close steam

Windows has a utility to make NTFS style symlinks called Directory Junctions. You can do this from the command line but first take your skyrim folder from the steamapps/common folder and move it to your SSD. Make a note of where you put it and copy that path. For example, "D:\Games\skyrim". Then, go to the steamapps\common folder and Ctrl+Shift+Right-Click -> "open command window here". If this doesn't work just use cmd.exe and navigate to the folder. Then run the command:

"mklink /J "D:\Games\skyrim" "skyrim"

Please note that you must run this command from the steamapps\common folder.

This will make a symbolic directory link in the file system. You should now see what looks to be a standard Windows shortcut. However, unlike a windows shortcut it will not take you to the destination folder but rather link the destination folder within the existing path. If you want to see the functional difference, try this method as well as the traditional Windows shortcut method.

The directory junction will still appear as steamapps\common\skyrim as if the data were actually on that drive. The shortcut will take you to D:\Games\skyrim. Naturally, the data is still on the SSD either way but the applications will only be satisfied by the former.

Good luck!
