KDE2 binaries

Ok, this is the dilemma.

I have my system running Redhat 6.2, which is now running:

*Kernel 2.2.17 (not 2.2.14)
*XFree86 4.0.1 compiled from source, not installed from RPMS
*Nvidia 0.9.5 drivers

I want to install KDE2, as I currently have KDE 1.1.2.

As far as I know, there are only redhat binaries for 7.0, not 6.2.

However, since my kernel is newer than RH7.0, and I have a new X-windows, I think that the KDE2 binaries compiled for RH7 should work fine, but, I'm not sure, and dont want to waste the download time on my 56k.

Anyone got ideas why this should/should not work, and what I might need to do to prepare my installation.

I do not really want to get RH7, or install KDE from source.

Thanks HEAPS; )

Boot Linux, Win2k, Win95 and BeOS on the one computer, an OS for every mood/occasion ;)

hm .. you should check if the glibc libs are the same for rh 6.2 and 7 .... there shouldn't be any difference running kde on rh 6.2 and 7. only the runtime libs must be the same but if you are downloading compiled one you should get the bins for your glibc version. if there isn't bins for your glibc ver you may have to download the new ones

You need to have the QT2 library as well. However, this is one of the components you download as part of the package. I noticed when I istalled KDE2 that all the KDE 1 stuff still seems to be there. I have a cable modem. Don't know if I'd want to download all this over a 56K modem. KDE2 is nice, but not greatly different from what I can see. I wanted it mainly for Konqueror since my Netscape browser always crashed. But Konqueror, while very nice, has trouble with some websites. There is K office, but I already had StarOffice which is better. In KDE2 the kdelnks don't get created properly. I have to copy KDE 1 kdelnks manually then use properties to set the prgram and name. So if I were you I'd wait until you get cable or until kde2.1 or whatever comes out to fix the bugs.

Also, I went to install KWINTV but it won't work because its install script or make file or whatever points to KDE 1 and libraries. So you may find other stuff you installed under KDE may not work or new stuff may not install.

as for the connection i can assure you all that 25MB will take approx. 3 hours to download on 28.8 :) so if someone is willing to spend one night downloading ... it is a matter of patience i have a friend who downloaded 650MB (one cd) on 28.8 for three days and he is very proud of that.
