hard disk wont scan

recently put a 20 gb maxtor hd in and for a while all was fine but now it won't run scan disk or defrag, i've run maxtor's tests and it passes them all i've also run sfc incase any files are missing from win98 2nd edition is seems to run ok apart from this although maybe a little bit slow

I take it that this is your primary drive then? Have you tried scanning the drive in DOS?

to scan in dos do you just type scandisk from the dos prompt?? and yes it is my primary drive and i'd be much happier if i didn't have to format and re-install everything

Yes just type Scandisk in dos mode. type scandisk c:
