Phenom ii x4 965 getting too hot at stock settings

Hi I just recently bought a phenom ii x4 be, and I tried overclocking but i realized it was getting too hot way too fast during the prime95 torture test. I couldn't get a stable OC at all. so i said screw it and set it back to stock and did the prime 95 test. It jumped up to 68 C. So i thought it was the way I put the Arctic Silver 5 on, using the "pea" method. So I opened up my PC and cleaned it and reapplied it using the credit card method, swiping it evenly. Started it up, and same thing. I'm not using the stock cooler, I'm using the Arctic Cooling 64 Pro Rev.2, which is supposed to be better and more quiet than the phenom stock cooler. I only bought the processor. I'm about to throw my old Athlon cooler on there and see if it makes a difference. The thermal compound I'm using is a couple months old and its been open and used, and sealed shut after each use. So I don't what the problem is. Can someone help? The idle temps are 33 C btw.

Jumping up to 68c is definitely not normal! I have that CPU and on my Hyper 212+ it only gets up to 53c and at about 56c it gives me problems. What are you using to read your temperatures?

strange, my Idle temps at current are 37-38oc, warm room tho but my load temps only reaches 50-53oc while BF3/GTA4 etc this is at 3.8ghz 1.45v.

I use Arctic cooler freezer 7.

How is the cooling overall in your system? I have 2 140mm exhaust fans around the CPU Top / Back, 1 140MM Front.

and my CPU fan is always at 100% - not very loud at 2200RPM barely hear it actually.

Max temp for the Phenom II X4 varies based on model. Ex. the 965 tops out at 62c while some of the lower clocked C3 stepping Phenom IIs top out at 71c. So without knowing which model he has either of us could be right.

I have (all 120mm) front fan and a bottom fan blowing in and a back fan blowing out. It's a very open case, i don't know the term for it, but it has a bunch of mesh holes on the side so it's got a lot of breathing room. I disconnected the side fan. How do I tell which model I have? It's clocked at 3.4 Ghz. I played Bf3 and Crysis 2 and temps were fine. The max it hit was 59c. I'm using CPUID HWMonitor.
I don't understand why it can't handle prime95 for more than 5 minutes... It hit 70 on me while I wasn't paying attention and the PC crashed to blue screen. So I'm guessing it's not the lower clocked C3.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I did disable the advanced clock calibration in the BIOS.
I don't think there's a way I can control my CPU cooler fan, maybe that's the problem? I know it's spinning.
I even re-reapplied the thermal paste, putting a little more on then I did originally, and I tightened the cooler pretty tight. Same results.
You think I got a bad CPU?

Wow. I just found out the problem... It's the cooler. It has a max cooling capacity of 90 watts. 965 phenom is 125 watts. Turns out the CPU they were comparing it with was the phenom x4 *9650*. Looks like I'll be shopping for a new cooler. Any suggestions? I don't do any crazy OCing, so the minimal quality is fine, as long it keeps it cool.

Just for comparison, I have built several PhII X4 965BE (125W) PCs. The last one with only the stock cooler (the big one with 4 heat pipes) was able to reach 3.8GHZ in a similar fan/case as yours and stay below the recommended 62C recommended temp during Prime95. And it was with the factory TIM.

Unfortunately I only bought the processor, no heatsink.

I'll try it out. If it sucks, best buy has a pretty lenient return policy. And I don't have to wait 2 weeks for an RMA ;)
