I think I want to reinstall my OS because of some problems. Of course I will copy the recordings to a separate HD first.

Would the reinstall render the copyprotected recordings unplayable?

In order to answer your question, the Copy Protection being used would need to be identified.
Typically, what you are refering to is called DRM - (Digital Rights Management)
If it is Itunes you are using, Apple has a proceedure for Re initializing your DRM.

More information required.

The recordings I'm talking about are from Windows Media Center.

They were recorded from cable TV. Some are flagged as copyrighted (usually premium channels, but not exclusive), and some are not. Those that are not copyrighted, I can play the file on another Windows 7 computer. Those that are copyrighted, can only be played on the Windows 7 computer that recorded it.
