Is an ATI Radeon 256MB x600SE Hypermemory videocard workab..

First off, thanks to all for replying about dial-up. There was an even
more recent thread that listed the patches I need to install and where
to get them (thanks for that as well).

As I read more, it seems like the default video card from Dell isn't as
great as I thought it was. As I understand it, a Hypermemory card only
has HALF the physical memory it is listed as, with the other half
coming from system memory.

With that in mind, is the above card at least workable?

Other major stats are as follows (f needed);

WinXP Pro
1 GB RAM
160 GB HD
3.0 GHz processor

Thanks again for any advice, take it and run.

I'm really enjoying it. XP Pro is much more stable than 98SE. The
only things that are odd are;

Very tiny keyboard -- as the keys end, so does the actual keyboard.

The metallic "on" button instead of the standard plastic one. Also,
the color of the case, white and black/silver.

Otherwise, no complaints at all. It runs great, noticably faster than
my old 700MHz P3. The only thing I can't do at current is Windows
Updates, because on dialup, it's too long. Once I go to DSL, I'll
activate that too.

You should really like it.

Take it and run.

Thanks for the reply.

However, a few items.

The computer in question is indeed a desktop system, not a laptop. I
found the same thing looking this card up at ATI's site, they only
mention it in the laptop range.

Here's the listing from Dell, if that helps;

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_dp_desktop4_2?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

It's the default video card entry. Overall, the PC is alot like mine,
just 1GB RAM and MS Office for Excel, Word and Outlook Express.

As for patching, what I'm not currently patching are Windows Updates.
I do have McAfee Firewall installed (and updated always), as well as
their virus protection (ditto to update) and XP Pro firewall. And for
browsing, I am using Mozilla 1.0.6 -- the only MS online product I am
using is Outlook Express for email and newsgroups. I avoid IE except
for picture viewing (from my own files, not online ones).

Thanks again, I appreciate it, and all the other replies as well.

Take it and run.

Even a 16 MB card can run WoW, so I cannot see how your card cannot be
workable. With a 64MB mobility 9600 (which I assume has slightly worse
performance to yours since 9600=non-SE X300) I run at 1400x1050 with
most options on, only terrain distance lowered to half. So there
shouldn't be any problem at all, even with the Hypermemory thingie.
However, if you can disable using main memory do it, since 128 MB is
enough and you need all the memory you can get for texture loading.

Freaky, I just put an order in for one of those less than 2 hours ago! Do
you have it already? How are you finding it.

Hypermemory (Radeon), Turbocache (PciE, nVidia), all pretty bad because
your videocard doesn't have much dedicated memory (which is usually
really fast, hot and expensive), but it is a mobile /and/ an SE also.
That is actually worse than the Hypermemory, so don't worry about that.

Fortunately WoW has not got very high videocard needs (like e.g. Doom
3), but it would have looked better on a desktop with a regular video card.

What might also be a problem is that most TFT screens do not look as
good as high end CRT monitors. They can lag and you can't change the
screen resolution of them.

I would get a good/small gamers mouse (they are also very light, which
helps keep your laptop protable). But not patching is very dangerous. At
least install a firewall (e.g. http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html) and
don't use Internet Explorer (use e.g. http://opera.com/download/). They
aren't very big downloads IMHO.

My bad, I never could get the hang of Dell product naming :) I guess
they build good computers because my dad is still using a Dell 486DX66
processor system these days and it has never failed him!

You should have picked the X850XT ;-D But your computer seems fine. And
I suspect that Hypermemory might even work to your advantage with WoW
since you will have more memory for your video card, which results in
more textures in your videocard that do not need to be retrieved from
harddisk (or hd cache). That is just a guess though.. But at the very
least you saved some money because of it.

I wouldn't have bought an SE though, I have an ATI Radeon 9700 myself
(pro would have been faster/more expensive back when I bought it). My
friend says it looks nicer on my computer. He has a 5700 FX IIRC (the
'recommended' specs).

The combination of McAfee and OE is probably a safe one. There was a png
bug in IE a while back though, so you might want to patch that.
<http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/189754>

You could also use Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0.6 for e-mail and newsgroups.
I know I do. You might have trouble converting your e-mail and address
list to another program though :-(

Sorry for my mixup. Inspirations are the laptops from Dell as it seems..
