My floppy drive is not working right, everytime I put a disk in now it says that the disk is not formatted. I have tried a second floppy drive and it says the same thing. What is wrong?? I really really need to fix this because I had to reformat my computer and this problem still exists and now I can't install anything :( HELP!!
Thanks!

Have you tried a different cable or a different position on the cable?

What is the difference between pink and purple? The GRIP!

What type floppy disk are you using? Are they formatted/unformatted? Are they pre-formatted IBM/MAC?

Should be Double-sided High Density (2HD), IBM Formatted 1.44MB

While it could be something simple....

Had an identical problem with an Aopen AX59pro board a couple of years ago (started getting 'floppy not formatted' messages in Windows whenever the drive was accessed), the FDD controller on the mobo had failed.

Lucky for me, the mobo was under warranty.

Well it's not the disks that are causing the problem because they are all PC's and I know the disk was working on my computer previously :/

I suppose it could be the cable that died .. maybe I'll pull it off the other computer and put it in to see if there is a change.

But what Hammerhead was saying goes along the line of what I'm thinking. But is there anyway to make sure it is the controller on the MB? I believe my MB is a DFI Ak-75 (AK-75 for sure). ie, everything on my control panel/systems diagnoses says the FDD is fine, shouldn't it give an error if it is the controller that died out?

What a pain, I bought this MB back home on the West coast, and I moved to the East ... sigh. I can't wait until Xmas to return it!

Thanks for all the replies guys!

What happens when you actually format a disk? Any better results?

As far as FDC failures go... If a single output pin on the controller goes permanent high/low, either the drive will not get the correct instructions or the FDC will not get the correct response.

The internal controller circuitry will still be working perfectly.

Anyway, all I'm saying is the symptom you have can be caused by an FDC failure.

Well, I magically got the FD to work .. by plugging and unplugging the cables and power to it and the MB over and over.

BUT, then a day or two after it has died again, and as of yet I cannot get it to work again. Do you think it is a poor connection? Is it possible for the cable to die out by itself? (I very rarely used the FD and didn't know it was dead in the first place until my brother needed to load up a file, so it could have been down for months before then). The whole system is only about 5 months old and all parts were bought new.
