Is the fx-4100 my bottleneck?

Hay I have the FX - 4100 cpu and I think it is a bottleneck for my XFX DOUBLE D 7870, I'm getting bad fps on bf3, far cry 3, and assassins Creed 3 etc games. If you could tell me if that is the problem it would be appreciated, and if the cpu is the problem would the Phenom II x4 965 be a good upgrade? Im going for gaming only on this pc but ill be upgrading to a i5 next year so a decent price would be nice? (trying to stay away from the fx series cpu if I can) Thanks -Josh

PSU Thermaltake 500 watt
GPU XFX 7870 DOUBLE D
CPU FX - 4100 Stock
Mobo 990FXA-GD80 V2
CASE Rosewill future gaming case
RAM 8gb Corsair

More about 4100 bottleneck
  1. yes your cpu is the bottleneck.
the phenom 2 965 should be a good upgrade for now
  2. Your power supply? Why in the world Thermaltake?

Not really http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/far-cry-3-performance-benchmark,review-32584-7.html - I know it's only a 955 but the difference is only a slightly less higher clockspeed.

FX 4100 sucks at gaming I'm sorry to tell you, the bulldozer architecture by AMD was a big mistake.
  4. I would jump onto a FX 4300 and overclock it to 4+Ghz
  5. Thank you everyone for the replys. So I'm assuming its either between fx 4300 vishera and Phenom II x4 965 Be, unless there is a better cpu of those two for just gaming?

What would be a better psu?

PSUs by XFX, Seasonic and Corsair are some of the best PSUs.
  8. Although the CPU is a slight bottleneck it's not gonna be that bad! I'm running a 7970 on a 8120 and I still see great frame rates :). Try this PSU!
  9. But my psu couldn't be the problem? could it

It could. If it can't give enough power for your hardware.

If you had $50 and you need a 400w PSU and you go with Thermaltake to get a 600w instead of a 430w Corsair PSU you realize it does not give correct voltages and is damaging the hardware and on top of that it's only giving 400w, so the Corsair one would have been the best choice in the first plact :). So your statement is correct :).
  12. So ill need to upgrade my psu and cpu?

It would be a good idea. :)
  14. So is my cpu or gpu not getting enough power?

EDIT: I would like not having to spend to much money because in the next year ill be upgrading to an i7

I thought you wanted an i5? Games can't really take advantage of hyper threading so if you want to save money then don't buy that. Just get a new PSU for now.
  16. If you can find an old 1045T/1090T/1100T then those are far superior to any X4 or Bulldozer, however in lieu of those you may as well get a 965 or FX-8350.

I decided to upgrade to the i7 to have a little more beefy cpu and it will last me longer

EDIT: forgot to mentiom upgrading to it in about a year
  18. But would this be a good psu? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139048 If so its between that psu or upgrading to my new cpu http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2372719&CatId=4433 what should i do that would increase my fps?

that corsair psu is much better than thermaltake i think. however a psu has no effect on game performance only on system stability.
but if its between new psu or new cpu id definately go for a new cpu.
it will have a decent performance increase in games

OP DO NOT LISTEN TO HIM
THAT PSU CAN KILL YOUR SYSTEM, GET A NEW ONE
  22. you guys are both veterans so what could that thermaltake psu do to my pc

I have the money for a i5 3470 and mobo or to get a new psu what should i do? Probably get the new psu?
  25. thermaltake is not a bad brand. and its 500 watts so it should be safe.
however there is another thing you could do. you could buy an aftermarket cpu cooler like hyper 212 evo or artic freezer or noctua and overclock your fx-4100 to about 4 ghz.
this should increase your performance of the cpu
  26. I know for a fact that the psu isn't the problem. I have the 4100 and an xfx 7850 and I as well have a bottleneck going on with far cry 3 and bf3. I overclocked and that helped everything out a ton. I'm gonna invest in a new cooler and that should fix the problem altogether because I will be able to get the 4100 to hopefully 4.5+ Ghz
  27. A new PSU would have been the best choice.
  28. Better go with fx 6300 just 10 dollars more.
  29. According to you what will be a bottleneck, FX 4130 or HD 7750, I mean what would you think what can hold the other one down, even by the slightest bit.
