XFX HD 6670 installation problem

I have an Optiplex 745 and am trying to install a XFX HD 6670 Graphics card. I have installed the new card and attached the DVI / VGA adaptor and connected the monitor cable. I can tell the system is booting up but I never get the monitor to turn on. If I reconnect to the VGA connection the monitor come on but the system stops and tells me to reconnect to the new graphics card.
What am I doing wrong?

check to make sure your plugging the adaptor into the right hole, ones dvi the other is missing a pin. Check to make sure your power supply can handle the load of the new graphics card. Make sure the graphics card has all the power plugs attached and is pluged in correctly I to the PCI slot.

600watt power supply, card has no external power connections so must be running off board power. re-checked all connections everything looks good. Should I have removed old drivers first?

it is better to remove old driver first and install new one when you put the card in

Will give that a try. If I remove the card will it go back to old settings?
