Backwards compatible?

i know it is a silly question , but my some friends tell me that my cpu (intel core2duo E7400 2.80 ghz )is backwards compatible and will support graphics card like 6770 hd 1gb ddr5. please tell me the meaning of "backwards compatible"

No idea about backwards compatibility, but the card will definitely work with your CPU.

What motherboard do you have thats the important part, CPU is more or less irrelevant when it comes to pcie compatibility. But if its 1.1 or higher you will have no problems, you "Might" see some issues with 1.0 if they did not include an updated bios to iron out the issues of the 2.1 cards (had this happen on an old intel board I was trying to make into an HTPC)

PCI-e slot compatibility it should be listed on your motherboard manufacturer page for the specific version number.
