AMD Athlon XPs

Hi all!

I'm sure this is something that has been brought up before. I apologize if I am beating a dead horse... I just registered on Tom's Hardware to see what the you (the experts) would recommend.

I'm in the process of building an Athlon box. I'm trying to decide which processor I want to run on my A7N8X Deluxe mobo. I'm deciding between the Athlon XP 2700+ or the Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton". I just wanted to get some feedback regarding the difference between the 2 processors. What would you recommend?

Here's how it's looking so far:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo
Athlon CPU
Corsair XMS 512 memory (x2)
GeForce 128mb video card (8x AGP)

Any information or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

if you have the money for a 2700 you might as well go for a 2.4c...

i would recomend the barton between the two...as it overclocks like an animal

I'll 2nd the Barton, good processor. Runs cool and it overclocks so much, so easily.

Thanks for being open-minded piii_man. Seriously, it's nice to see a suggestion from a fanboy (and I mean that in the nicest sense) but a response that's still open-minded enough to make a qualified recommendation.

haha...i am not a fanboy...

I have owned more than 4 diffrent cpu brands...and am happy with all of them...although my username may be misleading...

Yep, I know you're not a fanboy, that's why I felt safe using that term. It was just nice to see someone post a message based on facts and knowledge, even if it wasn't your own preference.

At stock speed, AXP 2700+ and P4 2.4C (800MHz FSB) has nearly equal performance and P4 2.4C (800MHz FSB) is faster than AXP 2500+

It depends on what you want to do. The barton has a bigger cache, but it does not benifit all programs.

At stock speeds, the 2700+ is going to be a good amount quicker than the Barton. So if you are going to be doing a lot of video or audio encoding where frequency matters, then go with the 2700+. Or just buy a nice heatsink/fan for the price difference and overclock the Barton to 2.1ghz.

If was you, I would buy the Barton XP2500+ and OC it to XP2800+ or XP3000+.

Athlon are so easy to overclock that I don't understand why AMD is not selling them with higher rating for the same price!

XP2500+ = 1833 MHz (512K)
XP2700+ = 2166 MHz
XP2800+ = 2083 MHz (512K)
XP3000+ = 2250 MHz (512K)

I'm sure you can easily run the XP2500+ at 2.1 to 2.2 GHz (equivlent to XP2900+) without any problem or complex tweaking. And the XP2500+ is cheaper than the XP2700+. Money wise, I think Barton XP2500+ is the best choice. But, of course, if you don't plan to O/C and have the money, you can buy the XP2700+.

The XP2500+ is 2/3 the price of the XP2700+ here in Canada.
