Excepting the physical build quality, it's generally considered to be
better than the 420EX and as good as the 550EX, though the manual is
written so poorly it requires careful study to figure out how to use
some of the more advanced features.

On my DReb, it also takes a lot of experiment.
That manual does leave a lot to be desired. :-(

Is there a web site with understandable instruction for this flash? I
can't figure mine out. Usually blows everything out. Also , even with
good batteries, I've have to tap it on the side or take out and put
back the batteries to get it to go on.

I use the first version (non-DG) on my 10D, works fine other than ocassional
over-exposure at close distances - easily remedied with a Sto-Fen Omni
Bounce or simply bouncing off of a nearby wall. The Canons are built
better, but unless you're a photojournalist or adventure photographer it's
nothing to worry about.
Works fine as a master to a 420EX, or triggered by the ST-E2.

If you don't need the advanced features, the ST model is about $100
less than the Super. The two models have the same power.
On my 300D, it works OK.
Oh, on the flash I got, the focus assist light does not work as
advertised. But it's OK for me, since I use large aperture lens and do
not shoot in dark.
The minimum power (close distance) specification of the Sigma ST is
much worse than 580EX on paper. But my ST works better than the
specification. It does NOT over expose ISO 800 with 50/1.8. I can
further reduce the power by using a diffuser like Omni-Bounce. I'd
rather save the $300 price difference.

Sorry. It works with center focus point, which I seldom use. Why don't
external flash use actual flash light for focus assist, like the
internal flash?
