I currently have a Cooler Master 460W Extreme Power Plus (80mm fan) and was wondering which GPU would be able run this PSU without and problems and not damaging the system due to the GPU power draw. I also do not plan to overclock my CPU or GPU

My Specs Are:
I3- 2120
16gb ddr3 Memory
Cooler Master 460W Extreme Power Plus (80mm fan) (stated above)
Gt 240 (current gpu)
1 TB SATA HDD 7200 rpm
258 gb Flash SSD (boot)

I am looking to play current games such as Batman Arkham City and at 1920x1080 high settings...

Looking at some of the latest GPUs, I am tending towards the AMD cards such as the 7770 or 6850 since they require less power per power than the Nvidia cards

Solution
If you want something that will play modern games at 1920x1080 on high settings you will want something closer to the 6870, and for that you will certainly require a better power supply. Check my sig.

I would go with the 7770 since it will draw less power than the 6850. Both are solid cards that should give you what you're looking for. The 7770 even looks to be a couple bucks cheaper on some cards at the moment.

To get more specific to Batman Arkham City, the 7770 runs 2 fps slower than the 6850 according to anandtech at 1920x1200 at extreme settings (36fps vs 38fps).

If you're looking for a more high end boost, the 7850 runs at 45 fps and should fit your power supply. I don't know if your processor would be a limiting factor though.

If you have to stick with that power supply go with a factory overclocked version of the 7770, I'd prefer msi's myself. It draws very little power, I just put one in a 450w unit, and will run modern 1080p games at mid-level settings.

I know that the price is nearly double, but the 7850 actually draws the same power as the 6850 (around 130W max TDP). I was just making a suggestion that would perform better for the game you mentioned. From Newegg's psu calculator, you need a 388 watt PSU for the 7850, and a 323 watt for a 7770. Newegg also tends to err on the side of caution and upselling people on PSUs.

A 7770 is NOT a power hungry card by any standards.

I just want to give you a run down here.

I3- 2120 - 64 watt part.
Gt 240 (current gpu) - 40-50 watt PEAK
1 TB SATA HDD 7200 rpm - I would say about 7 watts tops(that is what a WDC Black is).
258 gb Flash SSD (boot) not much, and its off the 12 volt rail. You are fine with that.

Cooler Master 460W Extreme Power Plus Sure it can not deliver 460 watts, but the system is NOT that power hungry.

Now a 7770 is about 60-70 watts at load(7 watts idle. This is less then your current card).

I would also like to point out that the power supplies over current protection DOES work and the power supply should shut off before anything bad is allowed to happen.

This is not trying to shoot down the importance of a good power supply, but to let you know that your system is very unlikely to overload even this bad power supply.

Again I agree but the psu worries me and for what he wants a 7770 won't cut it and going higher in power than the 7770 is risky for the psu, so if he really wants solid 1080p gaming he should go with a 6870 and a new psu.

Yup.

To be honest I had tried some 5770 + 1200 x 1920 gaming and was surprised, sure it was not MAX everything, but was not bad at all.

When you go power supply shopping, keep an eye on the combined 12 volt rail. You can not just add the 12 volt rails on all power supplies(some you can, but others its a no go.).

If the price seems to good to be true($30 700 watt power supply), chances are it is crap.

You may want to look into the 69xx(Not the 6990) and other 7xxx cards too, they should perform better.
