Ok so I was all set to go for a Canon Pro 1 - then along comes the Panasonic
FZ30 - what shall I do?

Think about your own requirements, then read the specs and reviews and
decide. Or wait forever while new models with even more capabilities
keep appearing.

If your goal is to get an ideal camera, one that will satisfy your
desires, continue waiting. Within months you'll learn of an even
better camera, and if only you'd have waited . . . But if you're
more interested in the art and craft of photography than the camera
itself, either one would probably satisfy most or all of your
photographic needs. That may make the choice a bit easier for you.

Because I own a lot of Canon gear and as I've yet to hear/read anyone brag
about the picture quality of the Panasonic digital cameras I thought this
would be an easy decision....

A few minutes later.....
Wow, the ISO 400 samples of the Canon Pro 1 on www.dpreview.com are
horrible.

The ISO 400 samples there of the Pano look a lot better.

The Pano has more than twice the zoom but not as wide (28mm vs. 35mm)

After 5 minutes research I'd have to pick the Pano.

There will _always_ be a better camera. Same as computers; wait 6
months and whatever's out now will be dwarfed by the new stuff. It's
technology, and will not stop advancing.

I recommend you treat it pragmatically: what are your requirements, and
how much money are you prepared to spend? Then find some candidate
models (not including ones that are around the corner, unless there's
some 800-pound gorilla coming out in 2 months) and check them out in
more detail. As to new capabilities, you will want to scrutinize them
closely to make sure that they will have usefulness for you - why spend
extra money for functionality that you won't use?

Interesting!

For me, the lack of image stabilisation in the Canon would rule it out,
particularly if I wanted to make the most of the full zoom range offered
by the long telephoto of the Panasonic. (I ended up with the more compact
5MP Panasonic FZ5).
