Video Card Upgrade HD Radeon

My current system consists of an ASUS P6T mobo, 6 GB RAM, i7 930 2.8 GHz processor, Radeon HD 5770 video card, and Win 7 64 bit. I'm able to run any game I throw at it fine at the moment, however, I feel the irrational need for a change. Would upgrading to say a Radeon HD 6870 or even a 7000 series show a noticeable improvement or would my system bottleneck such a card?

No sir/ma'am. An HD 7850 or above would be an amazing improvement, though an HD 6870 would be great too.

A Radeon HD 7850 will have nearly double the performance of your current Radeon HD 5770.

My ASUS P6T is of course PCI-E 2.0. Should I avoid Radeon HD 7850s listed as 3.0 or would buying such a card now make sense for any future builds? Or would it even work?

PCIe 3.0 graphics cards are fully backward compatible with the PCIe 2.0 x16 slot on the motherboard.
