Using a USB Hub with a Media Player

Is it possible to use a powered USB hub with a media player. I have connected my Sumvision Cyclone media player to a 7 port powered USB hub and it see this OK as a hub but does not see the hard drive when I plug it in. Is this what you would expect and if so would it work better it I connected both devices the the std USB ports rather than to the PC port?

quite often, media players don't have the required drivers for USB hubs. then again, it could be your HDD. have you tried plugging it directly into the player (not via the hub)?
