Using SATA/IDE adapter to try and get info off hard drive

My old laptop's monitor failed, and it was old enough that I decided to buy a new laptop...which has windows 8.
I bought and SATA/USB adaptor, removed the hard drive from my old computer, and have now tried to hook it up via the USB to my new laptop and it is not there...not in disk management, nothing....the USB works with other devices so i have to assume the port is not the problem. Any advice on what could be wrong?

  1. Try to restart the laptop while the drive is connected, this probably does not support hot swapping, and probably isn't plug and play. Try a restart and get back to us.
  2. still nothing....:(
  3. Success!
