recently my system went apeshit.
finally traced it back to a dying mobo.

along the way i discovered something curious.

when using an ata33, the drive was completely unable to rip audio tracks.
but swap back to its standard ata66 cable (the pioneer 106S is one of the first ata66 drives around) and it works fine.

curious, interesting to know maybe, but not critical, at least to me.

Need MUCH more chlorine in the gene pool i believe.

The 106S is running on the ATA66 standard, right?

yes it is.
ata66 requiring an 80pin cable to run correctly.

a bit strange as its MAX transfer rate is something around 22mb/sec for a dvd. barely 2/3 of the ata33 max transfer rate, let alone the ata66.

another thing i noticed was that even when using the ata33 cable, the drive showed up as UDMA-4 (ata66) in the bios.
