Does GPU PCIe 3 or 2.1 works with a mobo with PCIe 2

Hi guys,

I apologize if this is a stupid question.

My GPU just broke and im looking at the market right now and im planning to buy either Asus EAH6970 or Asus HD7850 / HD7870.
However they both require a mobo with PCI2 3 and PCIe 2.1 but my motherboard Asus P7P55D-E PRO is only PCIe 2.

Will these cards work on my motherboard?

by the way my CPU is kind of old too Intel i7-860.

If these cards are not compatible hope you guys can suggest a card that performs a little closer to these with same price range or lesser but not much power hungry.

All the 3.0, 2.1, and 2.0 are compatible with each other so you can use a 2.1 on a 3.0 MOBO or a 3.0 on a 2.1 and all the cards listed by you are good to go. Good luck to you.
