Hi,
I am building a PC on a website and was wondering; would it be better if i got the FX-6300 or the i3-3240?
I'm building this PC for mid-range gaming and in total will cost me about £500.

The GPU is a 1GB AMD Radeon HD7750 GDDR5.

I cant afford to go for a i5.

Cheers :)

6100, I wouldn't. i3 vs fx6300 is a toss up with both scoring about even on game benchmarks.

Are there any lower end options that would free up enough to get a 7770 or 650 Ti in place of the 7750? Say Pentium G860, G2120 or Fx-4300, etc?

if you want to choose i3, than i think it's better i3 3220. even with only 2 cores, i3 3220 is a powerfull processor, but if you want to play game like BF3 or Skyrim the larger number of core will be better (such as fx6300).

and fx 6100 is not in this level. but fx 6300 is a different story.
If you could maximize the potential of fx6300 (by OCing) it could reach i5 level.

and for gpu, if you could buy hd 7770 i think it's better.

FX 6300, costs the same as a i3 3225 and is better in all but pure x86 singlethreaded performance, but we already knew that after that the FX6300 just about rapes a i3 in the eye socket when value for money comes into the equation.

What components do you have and what do you need in that $500 budget?

I'd go with the FX 6300....can't go wrong with it. Yea the i3 maybe a little faster in a few games today but I'm very certain you won't notice it :) On the other hand, games are starting to utilize more and more cores, so the FX6300 should tie up and even beat the i3 in gaming in modern games much sooner than you'd expect.
Even Tom's hardware is emphasizing this fact, as you can see if you have time to go through the first 2 pages of this article.

On top of that this chip has shown that it can hang right in there with the i5's under properly threaded workloads :) Ripping movies, rendering, running multiple VM's and super smooth multitasking while doing a zillion things+an antivirus scan together at the same time? YES PLEASE!!! :D

I don't know about you, but I'd regard it as foolishness it you purchase any other chip than this at this price point right now :)

And to top it all up, it comes with an Unlocked multiplier, so you can easily squeeze out extra performance out this beauty if you ever feel the need to do so down the road. :)
