Hello,
I was hoping for a succinct answer to this- why is the GTX580 so much more expensive than cards like the 670 or 680 (at least on both newegg and amazon), when both or obviusly newer and more powerful? this applies to all manufacturers. Could someone explain this dicrepancy?
Thanks.

They stopped making the GTX 580, so there's no big push to move them. They'll just keep selling them at that price until they are all gone. There's also no Nvidia Kepler card out now that competes with the 580 at that performance level. Look for the GTX 660 Ti in August that should be cheaper and push the cost of the 580 down.

It makes no sense, but they have not decreased the price. What confuses me is they have crashed the price of the GTX 480 to 200$ and newegg seems to have plenty of stock of both. Why not bring down the price of the 500 series? Right now the 500 series is a bad deal and not worth the prices they are asking.

one of the reasons why its so is that the gtx 480 in question is the reference design. reference design is usually 10-20$ cheaper than the aftermarket designs. the GTX 570 already took a 30$ price hit, though the 560/560ti/560ti448 barely budged which is one thing i question with nvidias pricing
