Dear Experts

I am using windows 7 64 bit on my desktop (motherboard ASUS P5E)
ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS P5E

And I installed VGA SAPPHIRE HD 3870 (ATI RADEON Technology) 512 MB.

This VGA has a converter plug from DVI to HDMI.

Connected a 3 m HDMI cable from a converter to the Samsung TV.

I can see a picture on the TV but no sound

What I did for troubleshooting :

1- download latest driver from AMD website from the link below :
AMD Catalystâ„¢ Display Driver for Windows Vista/Windows 7 64-bit

2- Follow the instructions here (custom installation) :
How to Set Up Audio on an ATI Radeon HD | eHow.com

No audio from HDTV when playing audio / video from a computer system

3- Digital Audio (HDMI) option was grayed out (not clickable) as can be seen in the snapshot below :

The amd sound driver installs separate. (it normally gets autoinstalled, windows7 has a driver for it)

You must also select your default audio device in the windows settings.
if your current (realtek sound) is still working and has sound, then that one is set to be the default, so you must change it to the one that you want working.

Check which sound device is set to be the default on first, this is the most common trouble. You can run multiple sound cards on the same computer but only one can be the default one at any one time.

Yes it can, i am using the same grey dvi to hdmi adaptor on my mom's htpc that has a socket 939-x2-4200+ and a hd-3850 in it, on a 42" lcd tv at 1080p, the hdmi sound works on the tv speakers just fine.

You are thinking of the older ati x1300 to x1950xtx that had hdmi support but lacked the sound part. Amd added sound with the hd 2xxx series, it has been the same up to the current hd-7970.

oops sorry its the Avivo(TM) Package that installs separate.

I won't be able to select the one that I want because it was grayed out

After installing the package, it should show up in catalyst (vision in win7/vista).

It enables video upscaling, and a video converter that uses the gpu cores rather than the cpu cores.

No you don't need this package, it adds some extra features that's about all.
