Which CPU/GPU combination for gaming?

Which combination of CPU and GPU should I get for gaming??

1. The i5 3570k and the HD 6870

or

2. The Phenom II x4 965BE and the HD 7870 GHz edition.

I'd get a i3 2120 and hd 7870. The i3 2120 will perform about the same as the phenom ii x4 965 and you can upgrade to a i5 later.

I considered that, but with the x4, I can save ~80 bucks for the CPU and equivalent mobo.

id just save up for both a i5 and a 7870 from xfx (214.99 after MIR btw at us.ncix.com)

What resolution and games would you be playing?

Depending on your needs the 965 could make more sense especially if its considerably cheaper.

If you can stretch another 25 id get a 7850 vs a 6870.

Ive seen the 7850 in action paired with an i5 2500k and the result was great! I would go Intel on this.
