Hi everyone. I want to upgrade my system for gaming . Currently I have i3-2100 and gtx 550 ti sc evga version and 6 gm ddr3 1333. I have two options. Upgrading cpu to i5-2500 or upgrade my gpu to gtx 570. I just want to know which option will make me future proof for games like gta v coming soon and many others. I play games at 720p and will never go to 1080p. I want to run the games on high settings.

More about : gpu cpu upgrade

The GTX570 will give you more gaming boost but at your low resolution you are CPU limited rather than GPU and the I5 will handle CPU intensive games better.

Maybe save money and upgrade both?

i3-2100 is currently capable with playing any game without problems. An upgrade to it would be a waste of money. Get the 570, you will see much better performance.
-------------------------------

Let me explain further. The i3-2100 is a dual core, games currently out and games to be released within this year are not likely to require more than 2 cores. Games have been known to USE more than 2 cores, but not require them. Battlefield 3 is a great example. It runs fine on a dual core, but if you stick a 6 core in, you will see all 6 cores active. If you were to get an i5 you would see increased performance over the i3, but it wouldn't be by very much. You would see a more performance gain from a i3+570 than a i5+550ti. Hopefully this answers you question.

hello again rolli!

i think that's a really good point about the CPU being limited at lower res, and in that sense yeah a CPU upgrade should improve gaming performance in CPU intensive games. However, personally, I still think a GPU upgrade would be the most beneficial overall. what do you think rolli?

@ Hafiz Umais: At 720 resolution the 570 is far too much, and the i3 is a little weak, not much just a little. So, alternative option: Get a 560Ti and a better CPU cooler, then overclock the CPU.
Otherwise; go for the graphics card, but, again, I'd save some cash and get something like the 560Ti (unless you've got a super deal on the 570)
And make sure the powersupply can handle the new card ;)

get the 570 no question. my 550ti doesn't get my i3 2120 past 40% load no matter what resolution i play at.

EDIT: check for yourself, if the 550ti doesn't load the cpu as like mine, get the 570 . .

GTA IV was CPU intensive not so much GPU do not know about the V.
Hear is an example from a different game both computers have HD6850, one is playing @1080P with a I5 2400 and getting good stable fps, the other one has X3 450 @ 3.2GHz and is playing on 1680x1050 and barely makes the same max fps but drops much more. Conclusion is that the X3 is a CPU bottleneck, the game is The Secret World. The I3 is a much better CPU than the X3 so you might benefit from the 570 but more and more games will be coming out that can support more than one thread.
