OK I got a new 40GB IBM 60GXP finally, my other hard drive failed. Maybe I'm a moron but my motherboard won't detect the drive. I have all the jumpers set correctly, all the cables in the right spot, everything perfect but it won't detect the drive. Could the drive be faulty????

It might be, have you tried switching spots on the cable? Or a different cable perhaps?

Might have to manually enable it in bios too.

ok well I tried switching cables and it worked (I did that right after I posted this, *duh*)

BUT, shouldn't the Ultra100 bios detect the hard drive... I dont think it's being detected as an ATA100 hard drive.

I know it probably is but, are you using an Ultra 100 cable?

Is this an issue for BIOS seeing the drive, or the OS?

Depending on your motherboard there may be an option to set IDE level on the drive, and there may be issues if you are sharing the IDE channel with an ATA33 and ATA100 drive - they often do not mix well. If you have a CD-ROM or old ATA33 HDD this may be an issue.

Alright I fixed the problem. Thanks for the suggestions though everyone.

Peteb, I always keep my CDROMS and stuff on a separate array than the hard drives.

:)

Well...... it appears that the Ultra100 bios is only if you have drives in RAID, which I don't. So I don't have to worry about it not detecting it
