Hello Guys,

I have got an offer where I can trade my Palit GTX 580 1.5GB with an MSI Reference HD 6970 2GB plus $40 Cash. Is it a good deal. I know that the 580 is faster than a 6970. But my 580 is only 1.5GB and the 6970 has 2GB VRAM. Is that something to look at or is this a bad deal. How much performance loss would i expect going from a 580 to a 6970. The guys is ready to give me $40 extra cash as well.

What resolution do you play at? If 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 than 1.5gb is enough for you and you won't benefit from 2gb.

Even at 2560x1440 the GTX 580 does a great job, probably better than the 6970 even though it has more vram.

I play at 1080p. My system specifications are as follows:

Phenom II x4 Clocked at 4Ghz
M4N75TD SLI motherboard
8GB DDR3 1600Mhz
Corsair TX 750V2 PSU

But I have seen games especially Maxpayne 3 consume more than 2GB memory. That is the sole reason as to why I was concerned about the VRAM. is the 6970 that bad when compared to a 580?

That is what I said. He is paying me $40 with a 6970 for my GTX 580. I am not giving him anything extra with the 580. What do you think?

I don't know about that. I play MP3 with my 580 @ 2560x1440 and I have almost everything turned up to max and it still runs perfectly. I would just stick with your 580, its still an awesome card. Even with the extra .5gb of ram the 6970 cant catch up to the 580 level of performance.

Got it mate. I wont do it. But will a single 580 1.5GB suffice me for playing games at ultra atleast for another year or two?

Its the reference, I wouldn't jump for it. If it was a 6950 reference that would be a different story, but its the 6970 reference, which has an awful jet engine cooler (I know, I have the reference 6950)

Your 580 is still pretty quick and I would keep it if I were you.

The 580 is only a little faster according to this chart, but trust me it is. And you dont want that reference cooler.

Neither does this guy, which is why he is probably trading.

Quite a massive difference....

The 6970 blows punches with the GTX 480/570.

When things are overclocked, Nvidia's whole fermi gen outgun the AMD opposition at their price points by a significant margin.

Allright Recon. I will probably not trade it for the 6970. I will probably look for a GTX 580 3GB or a 7950 3GB to trade with.

Anyone here gotta 580 3GB for a trade? I can add extra cash but the main point is shipping I believe. it costs too much. I live in India.
