Hey guys so Im building a PC for a friend. It would be used mainly for gaming, media, and web surfing. The budget is around 700-900 dollars. This is my second build, and I would just love to have some advice and opinions on the parts selected before I start building.

CPU: Intel i5 2500k (Do Not Plan To Overclock)

Heatsink/Fan:

Motherboard: Arock Z77 Extreme4

Graphics Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7850 OC Version

Case: NZXT Phantom 410 (+ 1 front intake fan)

PSU: OCZ ZT Series 550W Fully Modular

RAM: Any recommendations??? 8GB 1600MHz DDR3

Storage: Wester Digital Caviar Black 500GB

Optical Drive: Cheapest They have...

All comes out to $850 (i get discount on cpu and motherboard)

Thanks in advance for any help I receive!

Since no OC I'd get an ivy bridge if you can (as long as it isn't more than $10 more).

As for ram I've never had a problem with G.Skill and make sure it's 1.5v. The motherbaord does support faster speeds and since they are only $5 and 10 more respectively that's what I'd get.

I agree that if you don't plan to overclock than it makes no sense to get an unlocked CPU. However, I will disagree with the above on RAM speeds - anything over 1600 will be useless. In fact because of the design of Sandy / Ivy Bridge having the RAM controller on the CPU - Intel will void your warranty for any speeds above 1600.

Try something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($194.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($87.55 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($41.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($88.98 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 2GB Video Card ($244.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Newegg)

Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($24.97 @ Newegg)
Total: $833.45
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

OK guys thanks for all the quick replies. I agree with the fact that anything above 1600mMHz for ram will have no effect. They dont carry anything g skill in the store im going to buy from, so any other recommendation on the brand?

as for the cpu...I agree with an ivy bridge....which one is the best for that 220 price point? the 3450 is 3.1 GHz i was looking for more of a 3.3-3.4

I am happy with my Z77 chipset, I would rather not have a h77 unless there is some advantage (is there?)

Thx for the hard drive recommendation, the black is quite pricey!

And NO I AM NOT GETTING A 7970!!!! thats twice my listed price!! i mean come on!! lol... The 7870 isnt worth the extra money, because the OC version will be great for the usage this pc will take

The case wont be changed, because that is specifically the one that my friend chose, but thx for those suggestions

for the psu....I will most likely get the cheapest 80plus they have that is 550W. I dont need 650, and it should be modular and trustworthy

Thanks for the advice, and Im sorry I wasnt clear that I was asking for reviosions to what I have and why, and not an entirely new build

Thx!!

I only recommended the H77 because it's less expensive than Z77. The features are the same - H77 forfeits access to the multiplier so you can't overclock.

They're excellent drives but not worth the premiums.

I agree that is a bit ridiculous.

The 7870 is worth it with the price drops - they're now around the $250 range.

i really don't see your point.... let me use this example:

you were gonna get an 84s Toyota corolla with solid diamond rims.... and i am offering you a Lamborghini Aventador with normal rims for a bit more and you're gonna choose the Corolla??!?!?!

thanks for the quick response. thanks for seeing my point in the 7970. if i can get a 7970 in budget I definitely will. I agree enitrely with the hard drive thing. If that is true about the h77 i take your advice. Is the pro4 the preformance equivalent to the extreme4?

All i need to know no is the cpu...what ivy bridge is around 3.3 to 3.4 GHz?

thanks!

You're probably looking at the i5-3450 or i5-3550. There's not a lot of difference between the two speed wise.

As far as the H77 - if you're not going to overclock that's the motherboard to get. If you're going to overclock you want the Extreme 4 or the Gigabyte UD3H.

Thanks.

I am going to go for the Pro4. Thanks for the recommendation for the H77. I am probably oing to go for the 3550, because the speed seems perfect for the usage this pc will get.

Thanks for the help!
