Only 1 thread is hitting 100% and causing laptop to freeze

i have an i7 2630QM on my lenovo ideapad y570. the thing is that sometimes only one thread ( it shows up at core1) hits 100% or nearby it and slows down the entire laptop. the rest of the threads are barely even at 5-10%. is there a problem with my laptop? can i fix it?

More about only thread hitting causing laptop freeze
  1. have you checked that you are running on the latest BIOS?
  2. You have four cores, but likely only one hard drive. If that one thread is hitting the hard drive hard, then other tasks won't have any hard drive I/O left to complete their tasks quickly.

That's why a lot of times an SSD helps as much with performance as a Processor upgrade.

But this even happens when im not doing anything intensive, maybe just downloading something in the background and watching something on vlc
