It's lame that digicam manufacturers provide kits with 16MB memory cards
and a NiMH battery charger.

Most people who have joined the modern technological age (in which we live
today ;-) already have a battery charger, and often they have a better one
than the manufacturers provide in these kits.

Whereas the 16MB card they include in the kit holds 3 high-res images,
or 0 (zero) raw images. That's downright silly.

Why don't they give an option of larger memory card with no battery charger?

For instance, a 256MB xD card costs about $40 while the Fuji BC-NH02
with two 2000 mAh AA NiMH batteries costs about $39.

I'd rather they include neither, unless the charger is for a proprietery
battery. Anything extra not manufactured/assembled by the OEM is going to
cost more to include than if you buy it on your own.

Right, maybe that's the way it should be.

My main point is that including a 16 MB memory card
with a 6 to 9 Mp camera is downright insulting,
and a waste of a memory card.

Right after I got my 10D, Canon sent me a free memory card. It was made
by Lexar, so it's top quality, but it was only 96MB. For someone who
shoots RAW, as I do, a card that will store 14 pics ain't real useful.
But, the price was right.

Canon DSLRs all include a charger. I don't remember if mine had a card or
not. To me, the only reason they would include a small memory card is so
you can check the operation of the camera. Other than that, yes it's pretty
useless.

My Canon dSLRs did include a charger, did not include a memory card
that I remember.

All my pocketable P&S cameras (Canon S500, Dimmidge Xs) included both.

My more-big P&S (Nikon 995, 5000, 5700, 8700) included charger but no
card that I remember.

Looks to me as if the idea is to make the simpler ones as simple as
possible, obviating the need to purchase a card to start getting
results. Seems appropriate to me.
