Hey Guys,

In the past 3 - 4 weeks my computer keep crashing and locking up while playing video games. Also over the past few weeks I can hear my GPU fans getting louder and louder ( i did clean is out ). So after running tests on everything else ( they all passed ) my assumption is that my GPU is on its way out. ( Drivers are up to date and everything is current )

So my question is what should I get? Should I get the ATI 7970 or Nvidia 680? I’m not looking to pay $1000 but would like to get something where I will notice a different from my 5970.

Thanks for the help guys!

Glen

Definately i would say get a nvidia gtx680. After seeing many benchmarks i would say the gtx680 is a better choice then the 7970.

The 5970 hasn't even been out for 3 years yet. Depending on the manufacturer you may still have warranty coverage

First thing first though you should investigate further, perhaps the thermal paste has tried up. It shouldn't happen but sometimes it does

Yes I agree you should review all options on fixing that card if possible but if you know for a fact it is fried and want to upgrade anyway then get the GTX 680 I will link you to a bench mark between both cards.

But before you do make sure your 5970 is shot. Good luck to you.

680 vs 7970 As you can see that the 680 does better in over 87% better than the 7970.

670 vs 7970 As you can see both cards are just about even in fact they are so close that you would not notice any differences in them while gaming.

Those benchmarks are old. The new drivers and higher clocks on most non-reference cards put the 680 and 7970 neck and neck.

I recommend the 7970 because of they have an overkill with the tessellation... games now adays don't really use tessellation that much but they will later on so I recommend "future proofing" your system.

Wow I guess they need to update there web site. Very interesting news articale. You know what that means nVidia will have to top it and here goes the grudge match again.

In a way that is good because we will benefit from price wise and performance. This happened with the 6xxx series and the 5xx series and AMD came out on top with the 6950 over the 560 Ti.

Well thanks for pointing that out to me. Cheers

AMD dropped the ball hard by releasing the 7000 series without full driver support. Most reviewers ran their benchmarks with the 12.1 or 12.2 catalyst drivers which was fair because those were what were available at the time. When 12.3 came out things got better, and been progressively through 12.6 and the lovely 12.7 beta.

However, when they paired the 680 off against the 7970 many sites didn't rerun their 7970 benchmarks with the newer 12.3/12.4 drivers that were available when the 680 launched. Instead they just matched the 680 benchmarks up against the existing 7970 benchmarks from several months prior.

Tom's generally does a very good job at using the proper drivers and that review I linked shows it. Another site (that shall remain nameless) that reviewed the Sapphire 7970 Toxic edition put it about 10% behind the 680 because they tested it with the 12.2 driver suite, talk about unprofessional.

That does make a lot of sence. I think I will drop a memo to them and tell them to get updated. Again thanks for the info. Cheers

The 7970 is the best high end card right now, most of the benches show a stock clocked 7970 vs a GTX 680 however may in here forget that the Kepler series has autoboost clock speeds. Once you start to overclcok the 7970 it will surpass the GTX 680. Also with the extra VRAM the 7970 handles MSAA better. I do not regret my 680's because I have 7970's well. Both cards are amazing but the 7970 is cheaper and performs better so its a no brainer.

It's not really fair to compare a heavily overclocked 7970 to a stock 680. The 7970 probably should have been shipped with a 1Ghz core clock and AMD knows this (hence the Ghz edition) but they didn't. Reference against reference, overclocked vs overclocked, constant power, etc... There has to be some baseline for the comparison to be fair. Most OEMs ship their 7970s with 1000+ Mhz core frequencies and they seem to converge when the 7970 hits 1000-1050 on the core.

OP What are those "tests" on everything else that you ran?. By the symptons it simply sounds like the card is overheating to me, It could either be clogged with dust or the thermal paste dried, or both. If you did open it up and clean it and reapplied thermal paste then I digress. Certainly doesn't sound like it's dying or anything.
