Budget PC - Core components.

Would like to know what you think of the below config. Will be used mostly for my daily chores and gaming once a while. Not a pure gaming rig.

Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 Motherboard
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Processor
RAM: G.Skill RipjawsX DDR3 2 GB (1 x 2 GB) PC RAM (F3-12800CL9S-2GBXL) DDR3-1600/PC3-12800
GPU: Suggestions required
PSU: Corsair CX600

Nice catch, that AMD Phenom II X4 970 at those times, truly best price it can reach.

Hmm 2GB ram, its up to you but firefox consumes on my machine ~600-800MB or RAM on day to day usage, and unless if you want to create paging file (technology related to windows XP era, where it swaps the slow hard drive and use it as RAM), i recommend making it to 4GB, however you can easily upgrade that in the near future.


GPU --> looking at your build, you seem price conscious, so AMD 7750 or 7770 will be great, if you can get the previous AMD HD 6850 man that would be awesome.

I forgot to mention I would use two 2 GB modules.

The only problem for me is sourcing that processor now. I'm in India and due to the product being almost out of stock at most places they have increased the prices.

What do you think about the FX4100 just in case I am unable to purchase the Phenom? I know the Phenom performs better (reading through a few reviews), but then would be left with little options.

If all you are doing is general use and some light gaming, an FX-4100 should be plenty.
Though look for the Phenom II x4 965, it seems to be the only Phenom that is still commonly available nowadays.
Also +1 to the HD7750/7770 GPU's. Pretty good cards for their price and power draws.

PS: I'm quite a noob when it comes to hardware compatibility. I hope the hardware would go well, especially the Motherboard and the mentioned processors (either of them).

Add more ram. 2 GB is miniscule nowadays and ram is cheap. Get 2x4GB sticks and that gives you room to upgrade if you need to.

I'll go for the Corsair Vengeance DDR3 4 GB x 2.
