So I recently bought this new computer off newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?I... and well I thought i shouldnt be having any FPS issues but im having major fps issues. I also got a Gtx 460 1g 192bit, In BF3 im getting a constant 25 fps in battle and if im lucky i get 30 fps wen im far away from battle, in campaign i get 40 fps that drops to 30-25. My settings are set to LOW for everything, and in nvidia control panel i hvae all the AA and what not off and set to performance>quality. I have also changed my windows settings from quality to performance so i have an old wins 98 feel to it. Also in League of legends i get like 80 fps but wen its a team fight i drop to 30 fps sometimes lower and usually have a constant of 35-40 that spikes to 80. My monitor is an old HP w17e which has a native resolution of 1400 x 900 at 60hz. I dont understand why the fps is occurring and its starting to get frustrating especially cause its a brand new comp with nothing installed on it except for all up to date drivers, BF3, LOL and msi afterburner. Wen i am playing BF3 i notice my card does say its only max 30% gpu usage on afterburner. I have seen it at 60% while playing lol, Nothing is overheating, mobo constant around 35 C and the gpu is also constant around 35 C. I dont know wtf is going on please any ideas? Also my computer has randomly shut off while playing saying something about a surge in like sata5 or w.e i dont remember but it happened only once and i thought nothing of it , it coulda been something about my PSU iuno, but ill be sure to be more aware of it next time it happens

Sounds like a CPU bottleneck.

alright and so theres nothing to do but a diff card right? srry im a noob,, also are there any recommendations for a graphics card that i could get with this set up that could run bf3 even at low settings with a good 50 or so fps , im on like a 130$ budget

If your GPU usage is only 30-60% then something is holding it back. It should be 80-90%.

Theres a lot of scenarios where the GPU cannot perform as much as it is suppose to. Here is a few of the majors ones 1. an under performing CPU 2.VRAM limits. 3. inadequate PSU

To test increase your BF3 settings to high. If fratemate stays about the same but GPU use increases then its most likely a weak CPU holding the GPU back.

This is what a gtx 460 should perform at. And this is high settings.

I would return that PC to Newegg and get a PC with an i5 2500k. You can build one for about the same price as that PC you bought.

so do u guys think its the a8-3870k llano thats bottle necking the gtx460? if so whats the best card to get with my cpu? was looking around and have seen people saying to get the 6770 and do a hybrid crossfire, is that the best option or is there a better card i could get that my cpu wont bottleneck? thanks

are you close to a microcenter? They have the best prices for cpu / mobo right now. Even better than Newegg with no tax.

Ripjaws 8gb $45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

PSU $49 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

2500k $169 http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml...

Asrock z77 $59 (after in store discount) http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml...

Total: $325, just pick a case(tower) and throw in your gtx 460

You can get the newer version of the 2500k, the 3570k for $20 more http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml...

just realized the CPU is unrefundable , ridiculous. So i might just go with downgrading the gpu cause ill probably get better results with a 6770 doing a hybrid crossfire as to my cpu bottlenecking my gtx460 right?

No you won't. CPU is at its maximum already. Downgrading graphics card will not change that.

so your telling me the a8-3870k cant run bf3 at even a stable 40 in multiplayer?

also back wen i had my pentium D and geforce 9900 playing league of legends i got a stable 30+ fps that didnt spike below 25 to much. with my set up now it drops below 25 in big battles. i feel like its something else thats wrong.

You're having background processes maybe? Take a screenshot of processes in task manager sorted by user name when you've got a lagging game running.

AMD CPUs are just not as good for gaming as Intel period. I would call and talk to a manager at Newegg during 9-5pm and tell them the PC you bought does not work properly and you would like to return it. I did this in the past and they gave me a store credit. And just buy the components you need and build it your self, its easy.

okay so i just noticed the POWER supply switch is on the wrong switch, its suppose to be the 115 V or w.e but its running at like 230 V or w.e, i live in the US and so its suppose to be in the 100 range and i believe the 200+ V is for EU, now i checked my mobo sensors and what not and it seems that the V onto the board doesnt exceed wat its suppose to be for example 1 columm says it should be at like 12 V and it remains at around 11 and one says 3V and it jusmps around 2.2 and 2.9 and what not. So now im wondering can this PSU just be up ? causing all this lag? either way ive decided to just keep all my cause im just getting a headache now, probably gunna return my gtx460 and get a 6670 to xfire with the 3870k, but now im worried about the PSU, is this a problem?? how do i tell if my PSU is faulty or if its a ticking timebomb

Just flip the switch and see whether it works? Anyway, I'd not exchange gtx 460 for hd 6670. It won't do you any good.

3870? U mean 3570k. With a 460 (or better GPU), 560 Ti 448 is a great GPU for the money. Your framerate will run much faster = smoother.

i am just curious because others with lower specs then me are getting better fps at higher settings wen i have everything set low which doesnt make any sense. could it be my poewr supply? i tried switching it to what it should be but it doesnt boot,

I think i found my problem, it must be the power supply, So i got the 6670 just to test my fps and the 6670 wont even boot up my moniter, it uses pcie power and it just wont boot. the gtx with the 2 power pins plugged into it does boot. the 6670 does have fan power but it wont boot on screen. I tried using my onboard with the pcie plugged in and it wont boot on moniter, and with it off , of course the onboard does boot moniter,

And i understand what u are saying, its just i dont understand why i am recieving even ANY lag in league of legends a low quality game in which my old geforce 9400 gt on an old 300$ 2g ram dual core (1 core) hp computer i bought that came with a monitor which gave me a constant 30 fps that DIDNT lag, and now im running this quad core with 8g ram with a gtx460 yet im getting fps even with all settings on low and everything on my comp changed to performance > quality. that is what i dont get. i understand my cpu bottlenecks my gpu but why is it this bad? and why is gpu usage always so low? and wen ur telling me my cpu bottlenecks it well i wanna see if gpu usage will be 80%+++ with 6670 but now the 6670 doesnt even show up on screen its just black screen , im confused as but now im convinced its my PSU

So i got a new PSU , and so that was not the problem, im still seeing the lag,now im starting to think it has got to be the CPU that is faulty or even my MOBO is faulty iuno

What's your CPU usage like when it's lagging hard?
m
0
l
July 26, 2012 6:56:13 PM

well i havnt checked that ill let you know , but its never lagging HARD , it doesnt freeze, its just the fact that its a stable / constant 25-29 fps in bf3 with everything set low , 1x w.e and at 1400x900 60hz native, also tried at like 1280x700 or soat 59 hz

when the cpu is maxed out u will see 90-100% utilization. BF3 uses one of the cores more than others on a quad core so you might not see exactly 100% use on bf3 when at its limits. Did u talk to a manager @ Newegg to exchange that pc?

Why are you comparing League of legends to BF3? BF3 is many many times more demanding.

@swolern He's comparing it because he's lagging in both games.

oh i see. what exactly do you you mean by lag OP? slow mouse response, choppy gameplay? league of legends has fps<30 also?
m

l
July 27, 2012 7:19:49 PM

well in league i get constant 30-40 fps, but in team fights it sometimes drops well below 10 until i leave the team fight and off on m own. It does feel alittle choppy at constant 30-40 fps. And ya the reason i mention it, is because i feel like i should be able to max out 60fps on high settings as to my current situation im playing at all low settings with 30-40. On bf3 it becomes choppy with constant 25-29 fps. Only wen i first load up or wen im far away from battle do i get about a 30-33 constant. I did and they wouldn't let me because apparently it states clearly that there is no return policy, and its part of the agreement.
m

l
July 27, 2012 7:22:55 PM

And its not as bad as slow mouse response, its just the frames are so low , being constant at 25-29 and thats the lag that that i am seeing. I can minimize and open up programs perfectly fine with no lag, the computer itself isnt laggy. Also ive noticed even simple web page games , like flash players always are a bit laggy. Also note, that its a new comp, no viruses, not many programs, and not many processes running

so league you get higher framerate. Im still saying CPU. Did you ever talk to Newegg manager for exchange for different pc/components? Thats what i would do.

Ya i may just have to replace the cpu, its actually been 30 days now, since wen i called them and they told me about the no return policy on it, and being so frustrated i just didnt wanna give myself more of a headache. So probably the cpu is defective ? could a defective mobo be a problem?? im going nutz, because others with the a8-3970k are havin no problemsss, cause i understand the a8-3870k isnt a great cpu , but i mean its decent enough to get max fps on league and 30-40 fps constant in bf3, just trying to figure out why this is happening to me. Also side-note I do not own windows right now, I had a situation where before the comp i thought i had a usage for a key i had but apparently its beened used once to many times and so i got stuck and am now only using trial windows. could that be a problem?

or could it be that the integrated graphics / and my gtx460 is conflicting each other? is there a way to turn off the igc?

Yes, connect the monitor directly to your graphics card. But I'm sure you're already doing that.

Did you try reinstalling windows?

July 27, 2012 11:43:42 PM

well i had the problem right after a clean install onto a brand new HD, first think i tried was playing a game to see the fps and it was like that from the start, and ya its plugged directly to the card, Im starting to think the igc is hogging up to much of the CPU which is bottlenecking the gtx460. but this bottlenecking doesnt make any sense to me, IVe read around and i understand but at the same time it doesnt make sense. I understand the cpu is bottlenecking the card, so what can i do ? downgrade a card??? but then someone here said that wont help, and i mean this cpu isnt complete sht, but its starting to feel like my old pentium D, Also thanks for the help and advice and what not! its all very much appreciated, im soo frustrated! Aslo , it seems like my mobo/cpu/gpu NEVER change temp drastically, even wen the comp is on for hours of gaming. weird????
