I3 3220 vs X4 965 on budget.

Simply trying to determine between the two processors.

This is a build for my roommate. He will not be upgrading anything ever because he's cheap and likes to hang on to computers way past their lifetimes. I say this because my main argument for i3 was being able to upgrade if he decides he wants more later.

Cost difference is about 50$ usd in favor of the AMD which would probably go into gpu.

Thanks in advance!

If he's mostly gaming, then a 965 with a better graphics card will probably be better. If he's not gaming then a quad core will most likely be a better deal, and the money would be best spent adding an ssd boot drive. either way it looks like the phenom ii x4 is the better choice for a budget.

The i3-3220 is the best choice for gaming, and overall.
It's faster and has a lower power consumption.
See toms hardware cpus recommendation for gaming : http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-o...

It kind of boils down to one of these two scenarios:

1) i3 3220 & 7850
2) X4 965 & 7870

Would you still recommend the i3 in this case? I'm not sure power consumption is a big concern to him or me for that matter.

i would take the 965 + 7870

edit: and if you get the 965 make sure the get an am3+ board for future cpu upgrades

AlphaOmega do not get confused since django and I have cited the same review and have suggested different cpu's. That's simply because both of your choices are at different price points.

I've sided with phenom because its the most powerful true quad at that price point and games are now being threaded for utilizing more cores.

In terms of pure Integer and floating point executions, ivy is much better. the fact remains though that such technical details will not strongly reflect in gaming experience.

Thanks for the helpful post. I had actually seen the article a few days ago and I understand the price points. Just right now on Newegg the 965 is 85 w/promo and I was having difficulty justifying 45 more dollars for the next level of processor. I will indeed go with the 965...even though I was pretty excited about finally building an intel rig haha. Someday :)  Maybe on MY next one.

thanks everybody! 965 wins.

Another vote for the 965be, but get the amd 7870 Tahiti or LE preforms close to the 7950 but at a 7870 price.
