Budget Range: 1000/1500 (I'm on disability and I have saved around $1,500 USD, Budget is very tight but I will splurge in order to actually play this game correctly)
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, video, music, internet.
Are you buying a monitor: No
Parts to Upgrade: CPU, MOBO, OPTICAL, HDD, CASE, GPU, PSU, RAM.
Do you need to buy OS: No
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com/amazon
Location: New Hampshire
Parts Preferences: INTEL CPU no other real preference, just not cheap crud.
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe
Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200 I play in windowed mode so it's usually only taking up 2/3 of the screen.
Additional Comments: I would like a quiet PC. I sleep with my trader in etc. and the lights on my old computer bug me. Silence and sleek low profile stuff is good.
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Been about 8 years since my last build. I'm sick of looking at low graphics, I want high or mid. and all models on. I hate shadows and spell particle effects so those are usually off. With 100000 things being cast you can literally go blind and not see what's actually going on. No idea how anyone actually plays with particles on anyway.
Here's my list. newegg items first.
Case: I'm ditching the mid-tower with blue lights for this monolithic silent star. I sleep with the computer running. Trying to avoid Lights/bells/whistles/flashy colors. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Fractal Design Define XL Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Full Tower Silent PC Computer Case 139.99
CPU: I don't use AMD anymore my old old computer was very very hot and crashed a lot thanks to amd. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 4000 BX80637I53570K 229.99 (Added 1 year warranty 23.99)
GPU: Pretty much a step above what I already have right now. (I own a Twin Frozr III R6950) But not tip top of the line, I think this will run EQx3 instances fine as well as run a movie at the same time or streaming music. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card $329.99 (314.99 after rebate)
Amazon items below
Storage: My old computer has a 500, 1.5, 760. I want to clean out the 500 and recycle it since it's had to lock out sectors recently. I think it's dying. I will use the other two HDD's in the old system as my secondary computer. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T3GRN2/ref=ox_sc_a...
Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200RPM 2 TB SATA 6 GB/s NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive 95.99
PSU: No idea but I want a somewhat modular one because i have cables coming out of my old one I don't want and they are ugly/take up space/restrict airflow. Found this one in an earlier build someone posted. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005IUVYA2/ref=ox_sc_a...
XFX PRO750W XXX Edition Semi-Modular 80Plus 750 Watt Power Supply (Silver) 111,71 (10 dollar MIR) 101.71 after.
Already purchased items below
SSD: main drive, I already own this, I was originally planning on buying this system over the course of a few months leading up to X-mas but things have changed and I now have enough to purchase the rest of the list above this, soon. Tonight maybe if someone can A-OK it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
OCZ Vertex 4 VTX4-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 189.99 already purchased.
I sort of want to wait for black friday, but really not.. If I do anything on BF It will be to buy more storage, a second optical, case fans and a nice USB flash drive.
EDIT: Found a couple slightly better deals on amazon for the HDD and Storage drive.
New totals are. down from 1,300
1044.09 shipped/warranty inc. for newegg items.
$222.38 shipped for amazon items.
Grand Total now: $1266.47 before rebates.
10 dollar MIR on the PSU
15 dollar MIR with the GPU
I think this is the best deal i'm going to get with this setup.
The cpu link i found earlier had 2 dvd drives free and I think it ended just as I was trying to add it to cart. if anyone can find that combo again i'd go for it.
EDIT 12/9/2012: bought everything on the list, the blu ray went up the other night to 69.99 so it cost me a little more but still the drive I wanted. I am really disappointed with the mid-range mobos after doing more research, it seemed that only the low end boards had dual NIC. (The ones with useless crap onboard video) and if I wanted a high end board with it, it lacked other features, or was a socket 2011 board. I can't afford a 6 core process or nor do I need one so socket 2011 is not for me. I'm going to have to just use my laptops wifi or get a switch for my room to split the network connection now. I was using a patch cable to split the net because I really don't trust wifi but my laptop is fairly new, 2010 built and the connection is good either way.
Thanks for having so much helpful info and other system builds to check out before making my decisions. I'll post more thoughts and how things went together and if I had any problems. Will probably take a week or two to get everything here. I ordered from newegg and amazon. I almost didn't because shipping alone was going to cost me more if I split it, but then newegg stopped their sale for the HDD so I got it from amazon along with the PSU. It was a better savings at that point so it had to be done.
