Nokia 3410 - How to turn off predictive text?

How do I turn off predictive text on a Nokia 3410?

I've tried following the handbook instructions, but to no avail.

A step by step guide using words of one syllable for a middle aged extreme
novice user would be appreciated.

I'm just curious: does *anybody* find predictive text useful?

I'm not aware of anyone in my circle who uses it -- anybody I've spoken
to about it has found it just plain annoying rather than even
remotely helpful.
