What can I upgrade to with a intel core 2 quad processor Q9400r in place

I am wondering if I can put the Intel Core i7 2600K Quad Core Unlocked Hyperthreading Processor LGA1155 3.4GHZ Sandy Bridge 8GB in place of the Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 quad processor Q9400

No. They use different CPU sockets. The i7 uses a socket 1155 and the Core 2 Quad uses socket 775.

Yes you can, but you have to replace other components also. The motherboard is a different socket and you would have to buy a LGA 1155 socket motherboard along with the new processor.

However, for the cost, you would be better off going the new components (CPU, memory, mobo) route.

I am not sure I just have specks of the hp Pavillion P6380T I bought a few years ago!

It only supports CPUs with a 95w (or lower) TDP. You are about at the max supported now.

Not according to the link I sent you. That being the case, 8GB is typically more than enough for most users. I assume you are asking about your current motherboard and the memory it will support.

You can likely install 2 4GB DIMMs, but I doubt your system will recognize 8GB DIMMs.

It calls for a max of 4 2GB DIMMs.
