Thermal paste questions

Hello,
I have a computer which I have not replaces the thermal paste for about 8/9 years. It is a pentium 4 HT, and I am wonder what type of thermal paste I should use to replace it, and wether or not the thermal paste (being in the state that it is in) will impact the cooling performance of the pc. The fans are automatically controlled, and most of the time they are on full.
