Does a processor helps in increasing FPS in games

i have got a new gtx 560 non ti OC edition but i wanted to know that should i go for i5 processor or should i buy any Amd Quad Core Processor for gaming .As i5 processor costs more than a amd processor i wanted to know that having a good processor increases frames per second ???? & if Yes than up-to what extent....

depends on your resolution and game settings...if you are playing at 800x600 with low details then yes you will notice a difference between the processors in terms of fps...but if you are playing at any moderatly high resolution most likely the gtx 560 will be the limiting factor in the system and you wont notice too much of a difference in fps

my screen resolution is 1600x900 so can you suggest a good processor needed at that resolution ?

what is your budget for cpu and motherboard? you want to get the best cpu you can that is within your budget....i can recommend you the best cpu for that resolution (or any resolution) but im sure you dont want to drop $1000 on cpu alone lol

To the op, there are intel dual cores that provide much better fps that most amd quadcores such as the i3-2120 is better in gaming than the fx series (of course not better than the higher end phenom II's)

but there is also the core i5-2400 for less than $200 but like drums101 said

we can't help much without the budget :D

if you are at budget then you do not need any quad core cpu there is i3 2120 is much better gaming cpu just put this with GTX 560 and crush all the new games.
