Ok so here's the backstory. Around a year ago me and my dad built a computer together with components from new egg. Brand new, pretty expensive, very exciting. It ran fine for some time and then the first issue came up about 4 months ago when my power supply fried. I got a new one and it worked from there. Today my hard drive now failed. Im not sure if it's related or if this is just coincidence.
Here are my questions:
1) why would my power supply fail? Is it just happenstance or am I doing something wrong?
2) why would my hard drive fail? Same question.
3) right now I need to buy a new hard drive I guess and I would like suggestions on what I should get.

I just want to know if these two occurrences are related and what I can do to prevent this.

Here is a list of my components:
MEM 4Gx2|CORSAIR CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9
WIN 7 HOME PREM SP1 64BIT 1PK - OEM
HD 1T|ST SATA6.0 32M ST31000524AS % (now dead)
VGA XFX|HD-697A-CNFC HD6970 2GB R
CPU INTEL|CORE I7 2600K 3.4G 8M R
MB GIGABYTE | GA-Z68X-UD4-B3 Z68 RT
PSU CORSAIR|850W CMPSU-850TXV20 (dead, Replaced with...)
PSU ROSEWILL|RX850-S-B 850W RT

If you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks a ton for the help, any feedback is much appreciated.
