What is the max number of CPUs that can fit in a motherboard. Could I essentially have 4 quad core processors? Will this idea even work? Its based on the fact that Ivy Bridge i7s cost like $300. That makes it $1200 for 16-cores. Does that logic work? is there a limit on how many processors a motherboard can retain? I do a lot of editing and some 3d animation.

Server grade boards can take around 4 CPU's but most limited to 2 CPU's.

Does the logic make sense to get 3 quads. How does that differ from dual six-cores? For the tasks that I want to do anyway?

depends on the os and if the app was written to use more then one core. I have an i5 cpu and with windows 8 and just doing web and stuff the other 3 cores are off and the main one is running at it slowest speed. if i was doing video encoding or audio the app may be using all four cores.
