Back-up software for Laptop to desktop

Hello, I have a Laptop with Op-system windows 7, I also have a desktop PC with Op-System XP. I wish to use the desktop for backing up my Laptop. I have a BT Router; the desktop is hard wired to the router and the Laptop has wireless connection. I have a home network; but I don't seem be able to share files. I would like to transfer files to my PC on a regular basis. Can you provide me with an answer?
