Since I never had any AMD GPU's since the 9700pro days, I can't say much about it. But, if you are wanting to watch 3D Blu-ray movies, the HD 4870 is HDCP compliant and should work fine with the 3D TV.

i had an HD 4870 1gb and have a 3D TV and powerdvd 12. Blu-rays will work fine but 3D won't work right at all unless you have a radeon video card with HD3D ?

Okay, I wasn't going to reply but now I feel I have to in order to make sure OP and others get it.

In the .pdf El Tigre Linked, it clearly states that only the 5000 and 6000 series of AMD cards support 3D. On top of that, only the 6 series supports Blu-Ray 3D playback. So, going by this information, I would say that the 4870 would NOT work. I have an Nvidia setup with a 3D Vision Monitor, and a PS3 hooked up to my 3DTV, so I don't use my PC to watch blu-ray movies, and because of this I haven't actually had first hand experience with what you want to do OP.

You ended your last sentence in that post with a question mark. Therefor, I wasn't sure if you were stating something or were seeking an answer just like the OP.

i have read that you only need a good modern graphic card and the rest is up to the 3d tv you play the movie in your laptop with any player and in the remote you choose the sbs (side by side) option and the 3d works fine (im not after gaming in 3d)

true an not true you still need a video card that will support 3D which the HD 4870 doesn't. i tried several ways with my old HD 4870 to get 3D to work but non of them worked ? you will need at least a HD 5xxx series or higer video card to work like an HD 5770 or HD 6570 ?

Yes, since it's a 6XXX series, it natively supports 3D Blu-Ray. Since I haven't had an AMD GPU since the 9700pro days, I wasn't sure about the 4XXX being 3D, I thought since it was HDCP compliant, it would work. :/

thats weird cause when i installed tridef on my laptop (amd 6290 radeon) and tried to 3d gaming it said that your graphic hardware does not support 3d (even when i tried playing a movies with their 3d player) if the 6290 supports 3d as say they why it wont work? is there any difference between the desktop graphic cards 6000 series and the laptops 6000 series?
