I am having problems with the display on my Canon S1 IS. The normal view
through the lens started acting funny a while ago. The LCD flip out
always worked then. I took some pictures yesterday and my camera worked
as it has been for the last few weeks. I kept it in the case after that.
I took it out this morning to download the pictures, and no display works.
The LCD flip out does not work. My computer requires that a display is
on to download the pictures. What is wrong?

If a fresh set of charged batteries doesn't fix it, then looks like camera
has gone bad. I don't understand what the display has to do with download to
the pc. All other canons require you to power up the camera in display mode
after attaching to pc. Once the connection is established, the camera lcd
display will be turned off. On my A95 I don't normally see the lcd anyway
since I leave it in it's home position. For the purposes of this post, I
flipped it out. The camera displayed until the connection was established.

How does a camera 'go bad'? Does that mean I should take it somewhere to
get it fixed or contact about warranty? My computer always requires that
the display be on. Since it started acting funny, I had to flip the lcd
out before connecting it to the computer. I would work then and the lcd
would come on. Now it does not come on no matter what I do.

You mean you still have warranty? In that case don't wait, just take it to a
service and don't even mess your brains by figuring what's wrong.
If not...ups...
"go bad"...that means something went balooney......
Like my "ex" S1...i sold it to my friend, and bamm...after 2 months of happy
use flash stopped working. He took it to a service and they replaced flash
unit with some electronics, which they called "modem"...(???). It came
(calculated to USD) about 75 US dollars... camera was about 2 years old. I
guess today's equipment are made for relative short time, especially
cameras, which have typical life just a few years (at least that's what i've
read many times on the internet), since in that time they become
obsolete... what a bullshit, if you ask me...but....

Yeah, I still have a couple of months left on warranty. I'll call them
Monday morning and probably ship it out then. Thanks for the advice. I
wonder if high quality digitals like EOS series or similar products from
other brands pull this kind of stuff?

Of course they do. Why else have warranties? If everything worked all
the time forever, there'd be no need for warranties. You're doing the
right thing. Don't dawdle as so many others do. They have a warranty
and don't use it and then blame the manufacturer for not fixing it,
forgetting that they just never sent it in.
By the way, if you get a card reader, you won't have to depend on the
Canon software to download your pics to your computer. Just pop the
card into the reader and let Windows or Picasa or some other program
take it from there.

Use the card reader before sending off the camera, maybe just keep the
CF card at home anyway...

I had planned on putting the stock 32MB card in to send it in and keeping
the one I use here. I do not have a reader. I do not use the Cannon
software; I use gphoto2.

I don't think they will take any of your cards. You just leave the camera,
without any card and any batteries. They have their own stuff for testing.
BTW...if you plan to get reader, be sure NOT to delete or format cards in
reader, since many users did complain about card not being recognized by
camera after deleting and/or formatting card in reader.
